Abstract
The study aimed to improve nickel coating to protect carbon steel from corrosion. Three different percentages of niobium pentoxide were added to nickel coating (10%, 30%, 50%) and by using the plasma DC sputtering technique, the researcher reached an improvement in the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in corrosive medium from 3.5% NaCl

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to improve the performance of heat exchangers by using engineering materials for the purpose of coating a brass tube type (B-111) used in steam condensers for Italian units in the thermal cycle power plant and protecting them from corrosion, unwanted deposits (fouling) and corrosion by erosion. The materials used in coating the samples are epoxy, epoxy with different weight ratios of titanium dioxide nanoparticles TiO₂ (1, 3, 5, 7%) and epoxy with the addition of 1% wt of the MWCNTS. The heat transfer experiments were conducted using a homemade double tube heat exchanger system, where the experiments were conducted on five tubes, which are an uncoated tube, fouled tube and in addition to the three coated tubes and comparison between them. Through this study, the highest corrosion resistance was when adding 7% of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, the contact angle of the coated samples, was the highest angle obtained from epoxy coating with the addition of 1% of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes. As for the study of the effect of coating on the heat performance of the exchanger, experiments showed that the tube coated by epoxy with the addition of 1% of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes had the least effect on the performance compared to the new uncoated tube.

Participation in a MSc defense
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ameed , Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology, participated in the discussion of the MSc student (Noor Sabah Noori). The title of the thesis is (Increasing Effective Life of Cu-Based Alloys Used in Ship Industries).
The student studied the effect of elements i.e. iron, nickel, manganese, aluminum, yatrium and germanium on the properties of corrosion by erosion of copper alloys used in marine applications. The oxidation was also studied at temperatures of 250 oC and 800 oC in addition to the tests of hardness, microstructure, , porosity and density and the results showed a significant improvement of properties, especially when yatrium and germanium were added due their ability to form a protective layer and high oxide for high ambient conditions resistance.

The thesis scientific reviewer assist prof. Dr. Ali Fadel Nasser/ Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University/ Al-Mussaib. The thesis linguistic reviewer assist Dr. Zaynab Naif Rasheed/ University of Technology- Applied Science Department. Sir Talib Abdullah Baish/ Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Sir Hussein Adbdulameer Baga/ Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources attended the defend and number of attendees.
The study aimed to address one of the most important problems of the Ministry of Water Resources, which is the problem of mass concrete cracking by using the self-healing technique based on microcapsules, which is the first study of its kind in Iraq, using zinc oxide based microcapsules, which are the first of its kind in the world of self-healing capsules.
In this study, the manufacture of microcapsules consisting of zinc oxide prepared by precipitation method as a healing agent and encapsulated with PMMA by the method of interfacial polymerization. Secondly, to study the effect of adding zinc oxide microcapsules and PP microfibers at a ratio of (0.5, 1, 1.5) % as replacement percentages of cement weight on the microstructure through SEM examination, on mechanical properties (represented by testing the compressive strength and flexural strength) and on durability through permeability testing by rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) and on physical properties by examining density, porosity and absorbance. Third, to evaluate the effect of these additives on the self-healing ability of mass concrete by making microcracks for the selected samples containing (microcapsules and microfibers individually and in mixed proportions) and assessing the efficiency of the self-healing mechanism by studying the healing products formed at the crack area by examining XRD, SEM, and EDS. Also evaluating the efficiency of the self-healing technique depending on: Crack width healing ratio and the recovery ratio of both flexural strength and rapid chloride ions penetration resistance.
From the results obtained during the study, the effective crack healing and the high recovery of early concrete performance using microcapsules and microfibers indicate that this material mixture will reduce environmental damage and the need for high-cost and low-quality repairs during the service life without the need for suspension the work of structure, as occurs in The state of the traditional methods currently used locally and internationally, and this is an important step in building practices, which will be an economically and environmentally sustainable approach.
