The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a doctoral degree to the student Shams Nassif Jassim, Department of Materials Engineering/ University of Technology, for her titled thesis

"Waste Polymer Depolymerazation by Nano Fluid Catalyst for sustainable materials engineering applications"

Where the discussion took place in the Graduate Studies Hall in Building C in the department on Tuesday, 21/12/2021, and the discussion committee consisted of :

  1. Prof. Dr. Aseel Bassim Abdel Hussein, , (Chairman)
  2. Prof. Dr. Ibtihal Kareem Shaker (Member)
  3. Assist. Prof. Dr.Ali Hussein Abbar (Member)
  4. Assist. Prof. Dr.Kazem Matar Shabib, (Member)
  5. Assist. Prof. Dr.Laith Qais Abbas (Member)
  6. Assist. Prof. Dr.Fadel Abbas Hashem, (supervisor and member)
  7. Assist. Prof. Dr.Mohamed Abdel Hussein Mohamed (supervisor and member)

As well as evaluating the thesis scientifically by Prof. Dr.Qusai Fadhil Abdel Hamid/ University of Technology/ Department of Chemical Engineering and Prof. Awdeh Jabbar Brihi/ Babylon University/ College of Materials Engineering, and linguistically by Prof. Naseer Abdul-Hussein Nasser/ University of Technology/ Materials Engineering Department. After the discussion committee recorded its observations on the thesis, which were divided between explanation and correction and the student’s defense of her thesis and the discussion ended, the committee decided to evaluate the thesis and decided to grant the student a doctorate degree with a full grade.AbstractThe study aims to find a radical solution to the problems of plastic waste and the resulting environmental damage. This problem is solved by recycling plastic waste (water bottles) and converting it into DPET powder by reaction process and using it in various applications. The effect of degraded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on the properties of fuel fluid and paints was analyzed and their properties improved. Characterization of the deterioration was carried out through Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanner (DSC) and tests tested for fuel materials such as viscosity, density, flash point and residue Carbon tests. Paints were tested such as adhesion, thickness and weathering tests. The results showed that the use of percentages of catalyst succeeded in cracking DPET powder. Polyethylene gave a radical solution to plastic waste problems around the world. The use of DPET in the paints also improved the required specifications.
