On 23/12/2017 a group of academic staff from the Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology (Assist.prof. Dr.Niven Jamal Abdulqader, Dr. Ahmed Ameed Zainulabdeen, Assist. Lec. Aseel Mahmoud Abdullah and Assist. Lec. Sahar Hussein Ahmed participated with Dr. Hussein Mohamed Yousuf from the General Company for Steel Industries and Eng. Dr. Ahmad Muzaffar from the University of Qadisiyah, in Iraq's fourth conference for oil and gas

First research was:

Assessment of oil outer pipe coating effect on the electric current for cathodic protection

This paper deals with impact of silica powder and ethyl silicates as coupling agent on the cathodic protection electric current. Analytical study is performed to evaluate the required current to protect the oil pipe (10 km length and 6 inch diameter). Many prototypes of oil pipe are prepared to and coated by previous mentioned materials. The inner diameter is protected by cathodic current. Some characteristics of coating had been investigated and evaluated. The results show that the coating of outer diameter of oil pipe by silica powder and ethyl silicates is reduced to halve value from the requested protection current.

Second research was:

Study of the low temperature effect on the some properties of lining coating of steel liquid gas tank

This work deals with the study of physical properties like shrinkage, adhesion force and coating thickness of aluminum powder and ethyl silicates as coupling agent. The results show that coating strongly resists low temperatures and it is non-porous for liquid gas like propane methane and nitrogen. The best thickness of coating was (5 mm). The optimization is executed using Takeuchi-Enova technique

On 4/3/2018 scientific visit had been organized by: Dr. Sura Salim Ahmed, Dr. Hana Aareer Smeij, Lec. Mervat Mehdi Hanoos, and Assist.Lec. Mina Faisal Khudair, Faculty of Materials Engineering / University of Technology. The students of the third stage in the Ceramics and Building Materials branch/ Department of Materials Engineering visited the National Center for Structural Laboratories for the laboratory tests; it includes a number of laboratories for ceramics and building materials, including the concrete laboratory for the physical and chemical tests of the thermal bricks and floors. The students knew several types of tests carried out inside the laboratory, the most important of which are: the strength of the fracture, the hardness test, the absorption test, chemical resistance test against specific acids and corrosive solutions that may ceramic products exposed to, as well as the test of thermal conductivity for floors and bricks.

On 27/2/2017,Assist. Prof. Dr. Jamal Jalal Dawood / Department of Materials Engineering - University of Technology was promoted from lecturer to assistant professor in implementation of the sixth session of the scientific promotion committee of the university which held on 21/1/2018 for the academic year 2017-2018 and associated with the approval of the President of the University on 1/2/2018.

On 2/2/2018 Campaign of Cleanup and Maintenance was done under the direct supervision of Head of Materials Engineering Department and Administrative Assistant. so that A comprehensive cleaning operation was carried out for all the buildings of the department with the maintenance, repairing and development of lighting  in order to provide good and healthy conditions for students and staff with a suitable appearance for the visitors and guests in starting days of second course for the academic year 2017-2018.
