Grant a master's degree

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a master's degree to the student, Ali Hussein Abdul Jabbar, Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology for his thesis titled

"Green Synthesis and Surface Modification of Nanoparticles for Wastewater Treatment"

Abstract

This study focused on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using two separate heating techniques—hotplate and microwaves—with turnip root extract as the reducing and stabilizing agent. Furthermore, the green synthesis of graphene foam using date syrup carbon source, combined with potassium chloride as a substrate. The foam was modified with the prepared silver nanoparticles to enhance heavy metal removal and antibacterial efficiency. Silver nanoparticles with an average size of 47.5 nm, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), demonstrated stability via zeta potential analysis. The graphene foam's morphology and structure were characterized using SEM and Raman spectroscopy. Filtration tests by atomic absorption indicated high removal efficiencies for cadmium (68%) and lead (39%), with lower efficiencies for zinc (10%) and chromium (27%). The addition of silver nanoparticles improved removal efficiencies for Cd²⁺ (75%), Zn²⁺ (22%), and Cr²⁺ (33%). The antibacterial efficacy test showed a 100% bacterial-killing rate post-modification.

 Abstract:

The study aimed to fabrication  a scaffold from biopolymeric materials to serve as a bioactive wound dressing for treating skin wounds. A physiochemical test was conducted  such as: FESEM, FTIR, wettability,    Swelling degree, DSC, amino acide composition, MTT and antibacterial activity test

and the results showed that this scaffold is suitable for use as a wound dressing in medical applications.

The Department of Materials Engineering held a workshop entitled

"The role of psychological counseling in treating the impact of drug abuse on students and society"

On Thursday, 12/5/2024 at ten o'clock in the morning in Hall No.1, Lect. Iman Kazim Hamza in the presence of the respected Assistant Head of the Department for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Kazim Matar Shabib, and some first-year students in the department. The workshop included some short- and long-term effects of drug and alcohol abuse among university students, lack of interest in studying, absence from lectures, and delay in performing assignments, in addition to dangerous behaviors.

At the end of the lecture, the assistant head of the department praised the distinguished efforts made in preparing and delivering the lecture and appreciated her efforts with a certificate of appreciation for the lecturer.

The Department of Materials Engineering held an awareness lecture entitled "The Role of Psychological Counseling on the Impact of Drugs on Society and Combating Social Stigma" on Tuesday, 11/12/2024 at noon in Hall 8. The lecture was given by Ms. Iman Kazim Hamza, in the presence of the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazim Aliwi, and many second-year students in the department. The lecture included identifying the threat of the spread of drugs to the life of the individual and society, as the health damage of drugs to the individual is reflected in his family and society as a whole, and it reaches the point of the emergence of social and economic problems. Drug addiction is the scourge of the age. The stigma surrounding addiction creates significant barriers to social integration, impeding access to job opportunities, stable housing, and supportive social networks. Moreover, internalizing societal stigma often leads to feelings of shame, guilt, and self-isolation among individuals suffering from drug use disorders. At the end of the lecture, the head of the department praised the distinguished efforts made in preparing and delivering the lecture and appreciated her efforts with a certificate of appreciation for the lecturer.

The Department of Materials Engineering held an awareness lecture entitled "Commemorating the Speicher Martyrs" on Sunday 11/10/2024 at 10:00 am in Hall 8. Lect. Iman Kazem Hamza lectured in the presence of the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Jawad Kazem Aliwi, and some second-year students in the department. The lecture included the massacre of the era "The Speicher Massacre", this painful incident that claimed the lives of our defenseless sons, whose number exceeded 1907 martyrs, not including the missing so far. The families gather every year in the same place of the massacre and carry pictures of their martyred sons.

At the end of the lecture, the Head of the Department praised the distinguished efforts made in preparing and delivering the lecture and appreciated her efforts by awarding the lecturer a certificate of appreciation.
